Osa Viisikymmentäseitsemän – Part Fifty-Seven: Queenstown & Millford Sound

New Zealand traffic jam
The bus journey from Christchurch to Queenstown took 9 hours, one of the longest bus trips we have had the pleasure to take in this country. After saying goodbye to the numerous other couchsurfers we got to the bus stop well on time as usual. During these long trips you can really appreciate how scarcely populated NZ really is: you go through hundreds and hundreds of kilometres without seeing any other sign of civilization than the road we are travelling on. Hours without seeing any human-made structure, not even the tiniest of villages, although many areas are conquered by sheep, cattle and sometimes deer. It’s not hard at all to believe that there are many times more sheep than people in this country.

Queenstown tunnetaan nimenomaan extreme-aktiviteeteistaan, me emme tosin halunneet ensinnäkään käyttää paljon rahaa tai hypätä bungy-hyppyjä ja laskuvarjohypynhän olin jo tehnyt, joten me otimme vähän rennommin.

Views over Queenstown

After the enjoyable journey we finally made it to Queenstown (needless to say Naked Bus was about half an hour late from the schedule) where our old friend Päivi was waiting for us with her little son Noah. We hadn´t seen each other for about eight years, since Päivi left Dublin for Australia, eventually ending up here in NZ, so it was great to see her after all this time. We settled in at Päivi´s place and spent a pleasant couple of days doing little hikes in the forest and by the lake. There´s not a lot to see sight-wise in Queenstown but the setting is really stunning: the vast lake surrounded by mountains on every side. What Queenstown is really famous for is all its extreme activities but since we didn´t want to spend much money, didn´t want to do bungee-jumping and I had already done sky diving, we took it easy. Päivi did get us a discount for jet-boating so we went for a spin and that turned out to be super-fun! It was about 20 minutes of high-speed boating on the truly dramatic-looking river, doing 360 degree spins every once in a while. Päivi also took us for a wine tasting to a winery where you didn´t have to pay for a tasting and we picked up a lovely bottle of Riesling. On the way back we stopped at a cute little town of Arrowntown which was a picturesque, if a little touristy, place with its old-fashioned houses.
Wine tasting once again

Dramaattisia maisemia on hankala sanoin kuvailla, joten annan kuvien tehdä tehtävänsä.
Milford Sound Cruise

Mirror Lake on the way to the sound

Queenstown is also relatively close to one of the biggest tourist attractions on the South Island, Milford Sound. It would actually be pretty close as the crow flies, however as there is no road going over the Remarkables mountain range, the bus has to travel nearly 300 km. Many tourists do this as a day trip: five hours on the bus, a cruise for 1,5 hours, another five hours back on the bus. Luckily we had time to do this in a more comfortable way by taking the bus only until the little township of Te Anau (about 3 hours from Queenstown), spend the night there and travel only 2 hours the following day. There is nothing to do in Te Anau itself but that didn’t bother us: it was pleasant to spend some time reading and surfing the net as we often don’t have the time for that when travelling. The only reason for stopping in Te Anau was to make the trip to Milford more pleasant. We had booked a Jucy Cruise on bookme at 95 NZD per person, which included transport from Te Anau, a lunch, tea and coffee on-board. The greatest benefit of this arrangement was that we were able to take the earlier cruise at 11:15 that was a lot less crowded that the cruise at 1pm that all the day-trippers from Queenstown took (we could see about a million Chinese and a few other tourists queuing for that one). On the way to Milford we made many stops for taking pictures and the driver told us a lot about the area and the fjord. We were really lucky as it was a lovely sunny day and the fjord was just gorgeous. It was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. The catamaran went through the whole fjord until the Tasman Sea. Along the way we stopped to admire fur seals and went so close to a raging waterfall that the water drops landed on the camera lens. It’s hard to find the words to describe the dramatic landscape so I will let the pictures do their job.
Our Jucy Boat

After the cruise we drove back to Te Anau, stopping again for a few more photos and also to fill our water bottles with the pure glacial water. We spent the night in Te Anau and returned to Queenland for a couple of nights before continuing towards the next highlight, Franz Josez Glacier.
