Pari päivää Enkelten Kaupungissa - A Couple of Days in the City of Angels

Even metro stops in Hollywood ooze cinematic magic!

We arrived at Los Angeles LAX airport at 6am after spending the night on a flight from Anchorage. After all those long train rides in Canada this six-hour flight didn't even feel long at all! Our hosts Steven and Jebb lived in North Hollywood and it takes about 1,5-2 hours getting there by public transport. We knew it in advance that the distances in LA are enormous and it takes an eternity to get from one point to another. We caught the FlyAway bus directly from the terminal to Hollywood Boulevard (8 USD per person non-stop) where we continued with the subway and finally arrived at the guys' place exhausted and sweaty. Luckily Jebb understood the needs of the travellers and we got to take a shower and a power nap before heading out to explore the city. What a change of climate it was for us, when all of a sudden we had to dig the shorts and the sandals out of the backpack instead of hoodies and rain gear!

Views over the city

Hanging out at the Highland Center

Against our usual modus operandi we didn't have any clear plans for LA as we hadn't had much time to plan in advance. Of course we wanted to see the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood sign but we didn't know much beyond that. It was easy to get to Walk of Fame by the subway, so that is where we started from. To be quite honest, this part of Los Angeles was something between a disappointment and a shock for us. I had not realized beforehand that Walk of Fame is just a part of a regular street, Hollywood Boulevard, which at least in some parts is far from glamourous. Los Angeles has a shockingly large population of homeless people and you can see them in most parts of the city, including the Walk of Fame. It is always terrible seeing people with obvious mental health issues, addicts and otherwise unfortunate people ending up on the streets and in the cities of North America you see that everywhere. It is just grotesque looking at a star with a name of an actress on it, representing all that unreal glamour and fantasy that the film industry stands for, and then this wreck of a human being lying on top of the star in their own filth and on god knows what drugs. This is hardly the image tourists have in mind when thinking of Hollywood. Around Highland Center the streets are less rough and checking out the stars is a more pleasant experience, although here everybody tried to sell us guided tours. From Highland Center we also got our first good view of the Hollywood sign.

Walt Disney Music Hall

After spending some time in Hollywood we decided to head out to downtown as we wanted to check out Walt Disney Music Hall as well as the nearby Calle Olvera, the oldest street in Los Angeles. Walt Disney Music Hall is a really spectacular building that is well worth seeing. From there it was a longish walk to Calle Olvera, a charming little market street where we ended up enjoying a happy hour beer to relax after a long day. The whole Pueblo de Los Angeles area was like little Mexico and a pretty interesting area to hang out in, although also here you need to walk past the tent villages of homeless people in some parts.

Gina with Batmobile

For the following day we booked a studio tour with Warner Bros studio, which we chose mainly due to the price (62 USD per person) and the fact that Jebb was able to give us a ride there in the morning - Universal Studios was the only one that would have been easily reached by public transport, but that was horrendously expensive. The studio tour lasted two hours, after which you could do a self-guided bit, so all in all the experience lasted about three hours. It was a fun experience, but probably it would have been more interesting for bigger movie fans than us - there was a lot of stuff about Harry Potters, Wonderwoman, Batman and other that sort of movies that we haven’t seen and most of the TV series they were talking about we hadn’t even heard of. Sure, the tour was good fun and worth its price, I just got the feeling we should probably watch more TV!

Warner Brosin studiolta ei ollutkaan sitten helppoa päästä taas ihmisten ilmoille - odotettuamme bussia iät ja ajat päädyimme lopulta kävelemään tunnin verran metropysäkille. On ihan totta, ettei Los Angelesissa julkinen liikenne pelaa ollenkaan niin hyvin, kuin mitä suurkaupungilta (ainakin Euroopassa!) odottaisi, mutta kyllä siellä turistina autottomanakin pärjää. Kärsivällisyyttä tosin tarvitaan! Matkasimme sitten kohti Griffiths Observatorya, jonka tienoilta on hyvät näköalat koko kaupungin yli. Itse tähtitorniin on ilmainen pääsy ja siellä on ihan mielenkiintoisia näyttelyitä tähtitieteen saralta, me tosin keskityimme enemmänkin maisemien ihailuun.

Griffith Observatory

It was no easy feat to get back into the city from the Warner Bros Studio - after waiting for an hour for a seemingly non-existent bus we ended up walking for an hour to the nearest metro station. It is true that the public transport in Los Angeles is nowhere near up to the standard you would expect from a big city (at least in Europe!), but it is just about possible to get around as a tourist without a car. It does take time and patience though! Our next destination was the Griffiths Observatory in Hollywood Hills, from where you have great views over the whole city.  This is also a great spot to see the Hollywood sign a bit closer up. There are also hiking trails to go up to the sign, we didn’t do that as we had been walking so much already. The observatory itself is free to visit and features interesting exhibits about the planets, however we concentrated more on the scenery. That was all we had time for on this short visit to Los Angeles, but we are still coming back for a few more days at the end of our California tour, so we get to see other parts of this humongous city!
